A Temporary Residence Card lets foreigners live in Vietnam long-term without renewing a visa each time. Learn who qualifies, validity terms, documents and how the TRC links to your work permit or investment.
Table of contents
A Temporary Residence Card (TRC) is the document that lets a foreigner reside in Vietnam for several years and travel in and out without applying for a new visa each time. For foreign employees and investors staying long term, the TRC is far more convenient than repeated visa renewals. This guide explains eligibility, validity and process in 2026.
Who can get a TRC?
- Foreign employees holding a valid work permit (or a confirmation of work-permit exemption).
- Foreign investors (and their eligible family members) — see the investor-visa tiers below.
- Family members (spouse, children) of the above, and certain other categories.
In practice, an employee obtains the work permit first, which is the basis for the matching TRC.
Validity
| Holder | TRC validity (typical) |
|---|---|
| Employee with work permit | Matches the work permit term (up to 2 years) |
| Investor DT1 (VND ≥100bn) | Up to 10 years |
| Investor DT2 (VND 50–100bn) | Up to 5 years |
| Investor DT3 (VND 3–50bn) | Up to 3 years |
| Investor DT4 (VND <3bn) | No TRC — 1-year visa, renewed annually |
Core documents
- Valid passport and a valid entry visa (or prior TRC).
- Basis document: work permit / exemption confirmation, or investment registration evidence.
- Employer/company sponsorship papers and application forms submitted to the immigration authority.
FAQ
Do I need a work permit before a TRC?
Yes — for employees, the work permit (or exemption confirmation) is the basis for the TRC.
How long is a TRC valid?
For employees it matches the work permit (up to 2 years); for investors it ranges from 3 to 10 years depending on the DT tier. DT4 investors do not get a TRC.
Can my family get a TRC too?
Yes — spouse and children can generally obtain dependent TRCs based on your status.
