When a trademark application succeeds, the Intellectual Property Office of Vietnam issues a certificate of registration. This document is the formal evidence of the owner's exclusive right. Understanding what it contains and what it means helps owners manage and enforce their rights.

What the certificate confirms

The certificate of trademark registration is the title of protection for the mark. It confirms that the owner holds the exclusive right to use the registered mark for the goods and services listed, and to prevent others from using identical or confusingly similar signs for related goods or services.

Information shown on the certificate

A trademark registration certificate typically records:

• The registered mark, including its specimen.
• The owner's name and address.
• The registration number and dates, including the filing date.
• The list of goods and services with their Nice classes.
• The term of protection.

Term and maintenance

Protection lasts ten years from the filing date and can be renewed for successive ten-year periods without limit. To keep the registration in force, the owner must file renewals on time. The owner should also keep the recorded details up to date — for example, recording changes of name, address or ownership — so the register accurately reflects the current position.
