Industrial Design Registration Costs and Fees in Vietnam
An overview of the cost components involved in registering an industrial design in Vietnam, from official fees to professional and renewal costs.
Table of contents
Registering an industrial design in Vietnam involves several categories of cost that accrue across the life of the right. Understanding these components in advance helps businesses budget accurately and avoid missing deadlines that carry additional charges. Official fees are set by the state; professional service fees vary by provider and the complexity of the design.
Main cost components
- Official filing fees — payable to the intellectual property office when the application is submitted, and typically calculated per design and per drawing.
- Examination fees — charged for the formal and substantive examination of the design.
- Publication fees — for publishing the application in the official gazette.
- Grant and registration fees — payable once the design is accepted for protection.
Because these fees depend on the number of designs, variants, and drawings, the total scales with the breadth of what is filed.
Professional and ongoing costs
Where a representative or IP agent is engaged, professional service fees cover preparing drawings to the required standard, filing, and responding to any office actions. Foreign applicants are generally required to act through a licensed local representative, which is a normal cost of entry into the Vietnamese system.
Renewal costs also matter over time. A design is protected for 5 years and can be renewed twice for 5 years each. Each renewal carries its own official fee and, if handled by an agent, a service fee.
Managing cost efficiently
- File only the variants that carry genuine commercial value to control per-design fees.
- Prepare drawings correctly the first time to avoid clarification rounds.
- Track renewal deadlines, since late renewal may attract surcharges or loss of rights.
Frequently asked questions
Are official fees fixed or negotiable?
Official state fees are fixed by regulation and are not negotiable. Only professional service fees vary between providers.
Do multiple design variants cost more?
Yes. Fees are generally calculated per design and per drawing, so covering more variants increases the total. It is worth filing only commercially meaningful variants.
Is there a cost to renew the design?
Yes. Each of the two possible 5-year renewals carries an official renewal fee, plus any service fee if an agent handles it.
