Modern smartphones can read barcodes and QR codes quickly, letting you look up product information, compare prices, or verify a registered company. Scanning is straightforward and usually needs nothing more than the built-in camera or a free app.

Using the built-in camera

Many phones can read codes directly through the camera app. The general steps are:

  • Open the camera and point it steadily at the barcode or QR code.
  • Wait for the phone to recognise the code and display a notification or link.
  • Tap the result to open the information, such as a product page or lookup.

QR codes are usually recognised natively, while traditional product barcodes such as EAN-13 may need a dedicated scanning app.

Using a scanning app

If the camera does not read a product barcode, a barcode scanner app can help. After installing one, open it, allow camera access, and hold the code in the frame. The app returns the encoded number and often links to product or company information.

Tips for a clean scan

  • Ensure good lighting and hold the phone steady.
  • Keep the whole code within the frame and avoid glare.
  • Clean the camera lens if scans fail repeatedly.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an app to scan a QR code?

Usually not. Most recent phones read QR codes directly through the camera app.

Why won't my phone read a product barcode?

Some cameras only recognise QR codes natively, so a dedicated barcode scanner app may be needed for EAN-13 codes.

What information does scanning give me?

Scanning returns the encoded number and, through a lookup service, can show the registered company and product details.
