How to Create a Barcode Online
An explanation of how to generate a barcode image online and why a genuine retail barcode still requires a registered GS1 company prefix.
Table of contents
Creating a barcode image is easy with online tools, but there is an important distinction between generating a barcode graphic and owning a valid, registered product code. Understanding this difference helps businesses avoid producing codes that will not be recognised in retail.
Generating a barcode image
Many free online generators can turn a number into a barcode picture. The typical process is:
- Choose the barcode format, such as EAN-13 for retail products.
- Enter the numeric code you want to encode.
- Let the tool calculate the check digit and produce an image.
- Download the image and place it on your packaging or label.
Why a registered code is different
An online generator only draws the bars for whatever number you provide. It does not make that number unique or officially assigned to you. For a product barcode to be globally unique and accepted by retailers, the underlying number must come from a GS1 company prefix registered to your business. Using a random or borrowed number can cause conflicts with other companies' products.
Recommended approach
Businesses selling through retailers should first register a GS1 company prefix, then create individual product numbers within that prefix, and only afterwards use a generator to produce the printable image. This ensures each code is both valid and unique.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make a barcode for free online?
You can generate a barcode image for free, but the image is only valid for retail if the number behind it comes from a registered GS1 prefix.
Do I need to register to sell in shops?
Generally yes. Retailers expect products to carry unique GS1 codes, which requires registering a company prefix.
What happens if I invent a random number?
It may clash with another company's product and be rejected, because it is not officially assigned to you.
