Consumers and retailers often want to confirm that a product is genuine by examining its barcode. While a barcode cannot by itself guarantee authenticity, checking it against registered GS1 data is a useful first step. Here is how to do it and what to watch for.

Steps to verify a barcode

A basic verification can be done in a few minutes:

  • Scan the barcode with a phone app or read the digits printed beneath it.
  • Check the country prefix, for example 893 indicates the code was registered with GS1 Vietnam.
  • Look up the code through a recognised GS1 verification service to see the registered company name.
  • Compare the returned company and product details with what is printed on the packaging.

Warning signs

Some indicators suggest a code may be problematic:

  • The lookup returns no registered company or a company unrelated to the product.
  • The printed brand does not match the registered owner of the prefix.
  • The barcode will not scan, or the check digit is inconsistent.

Limitations to remember

A valid barcode confirms that a company registered the code, but counterfeiters can copy genuine barcodes onto fake goods. Barcode verification should therefore be combined with other checks such as packaging quality, authorised seller information, and any brand-specific authentication features.

Frequently asked questions

Can a barcode prove a product is real?

No. It is only one indicator. A matching barcode is reassuring but can be copied, so use additional checks for full confidence.

What does the country prefix tell me?

It shows which GS1 organisation issued the code, for example 893 for Vietnam, though this reflects registration rather than manufacturing location.

What if the lookup shows a different company?

A mismatch between the registered owner and the printed brand is a red flag and warrants caution before buying.
