A common question for businesses starting with barcodes is whether two identical products can carry the same barcode. Under GS1 numbering rules, the answer depends on whether the products are truly the same trade item or differ in some meaningful way that affects how they are sold.

The basic GS1 rule

Each distinct trade item is assigned its own unique product number, known as a GTIN. Genuinely identical units of the same product, sold in the same configuration, share the same barcode. For example, every can of the same drink in the same size carries the same code, which is how retailers scan any unit at the till.

When a new barcode is required

A separate barcode is needed when a product differs in a way that matters to the buyer or the supply chain. GS1 guidance indicates a new code for changes such as:

  • A different size, weight or volume.
  • A different flavour, colour or variant.
  • A different packaging configuration, such as a single unit versus a multipack.
  • A significant change that affects how the item is ordered or priced.

Why the rules matter

Consistent numbering prevents confusion at checkout and in inventory systems. Assigning the same code to different variants would make stock and sales data unreliable, while giving identical units different codes would break the expectation that any unit scans the same way.

Frequently asked questions

Do two identical units of one product share a barcode?

Yes. Genuinely identical items in the same size and configuration use the same barcode.

When do I need a new barcode?

Whenever a product varies in size, flavour, colour, or packaging configuration in a way that matters to buyers, a new code is required.

Can I reuse an old product's barcode for a new product?

Generally no. Each distinct trade item should have its own number to keep data accurate.
