The term customs barcode does not refer to a product barcode issued by GS1. Instead it refers to the barcode printed on a customs declaration form, which identifies a specific declaration in the electronic customs system. This barcode allows customs officers at the gate to quickly retrieve declaration data when goods are physically released.

What the customs barcode represents

When a business submits an electronic customs declaration, the system generates a declaration number. The printed declaration or its accompanying barcode sheet encodes that number so it can be scanned at the supervision gate. It is a document-control tool, not a code placed on the product itself, and it is unrelated to the EAN-13 product barcodes used in retail.

How to print the barcode sheet

The barcode sheet is generated from the customs electronic system after the declaration is accepted. Typical steps include:

  • Log in to the customs declaration software or portal used by the business.
  • Locate the accepted declaration by its number.
  • Select the option to print the barcode or gate-supervision sheet.
  • Print it and present it, together with the goods, at the customs supervision area.

Why it matters

Presenting the correct barcode sheet speeds up physical clearance because officers scan it rather than re-entering data. An incorrect or missing sheet can delay release of the shipment. Businesses should confirm that the declaration status allows gate clearance before printing.

Frequently asked questions

Is a customs barcode the same as a GS1 product barcode?

No. A customs barcode identifies a customs declaration in the electronic system, while a GS1 barcode identifies a product for retail and inventory purposes.

Where does the customs barcode come from?

It is generated automatically by the customs electronic system once your declaration is registered and accepted.

Do I need to register anything to get a customs barcode?

No separate registration is required; it is produced as part of the standard electronic customs declaration process.
