Table of contents

Copyright registration in Vietnam follows a common framework, but the sample copies and supporting documents differ depending on the type of work. Identifying the correct category for a book, an image, a video or a script helps the application proceed smoothly and ensures the certificate reflects the work accurately.

Books and written works

Books, manuscripts and articles are registered as literary works. Applications usually include a copy of the text and documents identifying the author and owner. Where a work has an editor, translator or co-authors, the respective contributions and rights should be clarified, since translations and adaptations are treated as derivative works with their own considerations.

Images and photographs

Paintings, illustrations and photographs are registered as works of fine art or photographic works. Sample images are submitted with the application. For commissioned photographs, a written agreement clarifying who owns the economic rights is important, as ownership may otherwise depend on the circumstances of creation.

Videos and scripts

Audiovisual content is registered as a cinematographic work, while a screenplay is registered as a written work. Film and video projects often involve many contributors, so it is common to record the producer as owner based on contracts with directors, writers and performers. A script can be registered separately from the finished film, which is useful when the two are created and exploited at different times.

  • Books: a copy of the text and author or ownership documents;
  • Images: sample images and, for commissions, an assignment;
  • Videos: the audiovisual work with contracts establishing ownership;
  • Scripts: the written work, often registered before production.

Frequently asked questions

Can I register a script separately from the film?

Yes. A screenplay can be registered as a written work independently of the finished audiovisual work.

Ownership depends on the agreement. A written assignment to the commissioning party is recommended to avoid uncertainty.

Do translations need separate registration?

A translation is a derivative work and can be registered separately, subject to the rights in the original work.
